Many U.S. citizens are wondering about The Affordable Care Act, also known as "Obamacare". Many people ask, "how will it affect me?", or "what exactly does this mean?".  Below is a list of some of the pros and cons of Obamacare, and some resources to help.

What is The Affordable Care Act?

PROS:
  • 32 million Americans are currently without health insurance. Thanks to this Act, a larger portion of the general population will now have access to the coverage they need.
  • Patients with pre-existing conditions cannot be denied coverage by insurance companies, and companies can no longer drop someone once they get sick.
  • College students can stay on their parents’ plans until the age of 26.
  • The federal government will pay the states to allow low-income individuals to enroll in Medicaid.
  • The Medicaid “doughnut hole” gap in coverage will be eliminated by 2020.
  • Each year, $125 million will go towards funding school-based health centers and programs to reduce teen pregnancy.
  • States are required to set up insurance exchanges to make it easier to find the best deals on private health insurance.
  • If an insurance company denies someone coverage, that person can go to an external appeals process.
  • The number of bankruptcies caused by health-related issues will be severely reduced.

CONS:
  • The intrusion of the federal government into the practice of medicine.
  • 18 million of the uninsured will be forced to go under Medicaid, while the rest will have to accept another government program. Even so, millions will remain uninsured.
  • By 2019, an estimated 4.8 million seniors will be forced out of Medicare Advantage.
  • Medicare will be cut by $528 billion dollars.
  • Taxes will be increased (especially on high-income individuals).
  • By forcing States to accept federally-mandated health insurance, the Act violates States’ rights.
  • Some speculate that you can be thrown in jail for failure to pay your health insurance taxes.

Do you have those annoying little (or big) pimples that just won't seem to go away?  Have you tried all kinds of medications, spending money you can't afford to, and it still didn't work?  Try these 5 home remedies....they don't cost you anything, and they are very effective.

1. Lemon juice
Lemon and lime juice works similar to vinegar. Simply rub a piece of lemon on your face in the evening and wash it off next morning. It will get rid of oils and bacteria. Both vinegar and lemon dry your skin not only of oil but of moisture as well, so you should use a moisturizing cream or lotion daily.

2. Vinegar
Vinegar helps to get rid of excessive oils from your skin, as well as to kill the bacteria that cause acne. It is best to use apple vinegar - it is milder, but generally any vinegar would do. Dilute 1 spoon of vinegar in 8 spoons of water and wash your face with this cleanser.

3. Oatmeal
Oatmeal can clean and revitalize your skin greatly. Boil it in water for a few minutes, then let it cool down. When it cools to room temperature, apply to your face and leave for 10-15 minutes. Carefully wash off with warm water. It will get rid of oils, and your skin will feel much better.

4. Egg whites
Egg whites are used a lot to clear acne. It exfoliates the skin and absorbs oil. Apply it as a facial mask - beat an egg white and spread it over your face. In 10-15 minutes, wash it off with warm water.

5. Foods rich in Vitamin B5
Vitamin B5, also called Pantothenic Acid, is greatly important for acne control. Good sources of Vitamin B5 are eggs, poultry, meat, mushrooms, fish, liver, sunflower seeds, all beans, bananas, oranges, and whole grain products. Include some of these foods in your daily diet.

Never pinch your acne...it gives immediate results, but makes the condition much worse in the long run, leaving scars and potentially making the problem worse than it was.

Try these home treatments.  Once again, it doesn't cost much, just the cost of the product (which is much cheaper than any acne medications). After using the home remedies for about a week or so, you should notice improvement in your skin!

When you look at the title of this blog, what do you think of?  Some obsurd profanity, or maybe just something you don't like? When I speak of the "A" word, I am speaking of Autism Spectrum Disorder.  Many people do not know what it is, or what an "autistic child" looks like.  Autism is a disorder of neural development characterized by impaired social interaction and verbal and non-verbal communication, and by restrictive, repetitive, or stereotyped behavior.  My youngest daughter was diagnosed at the age of 7 with PDD-NOS (Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified).  It is also called "atypical autism", because not all of the criteria are met, but the child still has symptoms of autism.  Some children with PDD-NOS have a mild case, while there are others that are severe.  In my daughter's case, it got pretty severe at times.

I knew something was wrong before she was one year old....she was not attempting to walk, she constantly rocked her head from side to side, and she had problems with many things that other babies had no problem with.  She was lactose and soy intolerant, so for the first year of her life she was on special formula.  Before she was two years old, she had already been to a neurologist, who diagnosed her with "benign congenital hypotonia", or weak leg muscles.  We worked with her and got her walking at the age of 2.  It was a wonderful feeling!!

When the time came for her to attend a Special Ed Preschool, some days were a nightmare.  From that time up until the first grade, I got calls 3-5 times a week, sometimes more.  She did not like loud noises, she didn't want to socialize, she didn't like the bright lights....these were because of the sensory and communication problems associated with her condition.  There were times when she would lose control and throw things or walk out of the classroom, and it was very difficult to calm her down. But with hard work and persistance, we were able to calm her down.

There is so much more I could tell you about my daughter, but I want to get straight to the point.  People that have autism are no different than you and me, their brains are just wired a little bit differently.  Young children that have autism sometimes cannot help the way they act.  So when you see a child acting "different", do not label that child as a "wild child"....there just might be more to him/her that meets the eye. ♥
